Real Atunara aims to contribute actively to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the UN General Assembly:
Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
According to the study published in 2015 by the European Commission’s Fisheries Commission, “no fishing method in the history of humanity has proven to be as reliable, efficient and selective while also being sustainable and environmentally friendly.”
The sustainability of the almadrava is indisputable when compared to mechanised industrial fishing methods. Unlike trawling, it does not destroy the ocean bed and nor does it have the impact of longline fishing, which, in the rush to catch one species, kills other undesired and even protected ones. It is estimated that only 0.1% of the Atlantic bluefin tuna that pass by the Algarve on the way to the Mediterranean are caught in the nets.
All our Atlantic bluefin tuna are wild adult fish caught using sustainable fishing techniques. They are bred, fed and caught to order, following the Japanese method of ike jime. This technique not only minimizes the animal’s suffering but also ensures the properties of the meat are kept intact.
In terms of transparency, all of our products come with documentation to ensure full traceability from sea to plate.
